The homopolyester (mol. wt. 8000-12,000) is insoluble in dilute acids and bases and all solvents up to their boiling points. It melts at about 500°C and is difl cult to fabricate. It can be shaped only by hammering (like a metal), by impact molding and by pressure sintering (420°C at 35 MPa). The difficulty in fabrication has severely limited the wider application of these polymers. [Pg.446]

Nylon 6 is fabricated into fibers, bristles, rope, high-impact moldings, and tire cords. [Pg.570]

The nylons are a family of polymers, the members of which have subtly different properties that suit them to one use or another. The two most widely used members of this family are nylon 66 and nylon 6. Nylon 6 is so named because it is synthesized from caprolactam, a six-carbon monomer. In the synthesis of nylon 6, caprolactam is partially hydrolyzed to 6-aminohexanoic acid and then heated to 250°C to bring about polymerization. Nylon 6 is fabricated into fibers, brush bristles, rope, high-impact moldings, and tire cords. [Pg.1218]

Valve gating nozzles used in sprueless molding also belong in the general category of shutoff nozzles, as do the nozzles which are used for impact molding. [Pg.264]

Another cylindrical cell is the inside-out construction shown in Fig. 8.4. This construction does not use the zinc anode as the container. This version resulted in more efficient zinc utilization and improved leakage, but has not been manufactured since the late 1960s. In this cell, an impact-molded impervious inert carbon wall serves as the container of the cell and as the cathode current collector. The zinc anode, in the shape of vanes, is located inside the cell and is surrounded by the cathode mix. [Pg.191]

The battery jacket can be made of various components metal, paper, plastic, polymer films, plain or asphalt-lined cardboard, or foil in combination or alone. The jacket provides strength, protection, leakage prevention, electrical isolation, decoration, and a site for the manufacturer s label. In many manufacturers designs, the jacket is an integral part of the sealing system. It locks some seals in place, provides a vent path for the escape of gases, or acts as a supporting member to allow seals to flex under internal gas pressures. In the inside-out construction, the jacket was the container in which a carb on-wax collector was impact-molded (Fig. 8.4). [Pg.198]

High-molecular-weight styrene-MA copolymers with small amounts of MA are very useful in high-impact molding materials. Dylark, " a product of Arco Polymers, and Cadon resins, " " recently introduced by Monsanto, are such polymers. These materials offer rigidity equivalent to many other thermoplastics and heat deflection temperatures of present products range between 230°F and 260°F, with higher... [Pg.273]
