Immunological marker

It is known that chronic active inflammation in the gastric mucosa involves several interleukins (IL-8, IL-10 and IFN-gamma) known as immunological markers of the blood serum [33]. Hence it is possible that extensive gastric inflammation would lead to an increased release of some of the volatile inflammatory biomarkers in breath causing differences in the sensor response. 

Some teratoma cell lines isolated by method 1, e.g. the F9 cell line, have almost lost their capacity to differentiate. However, Strickland and Mahdavi (1978) have shown that differentation may be induced with retinoic acid at 10 9M. Again endoderm formation is detected by formation of plasminogen activator, a- foetoprotein, or by use of immunological markers (Adamson and Grover, 1983).

However, most studies on humans occupationally exposed to mercury identify no effects on immunological markers such as serum immunoglobulins and autoantibodies [73,74], albeit Ellingsen et al. [75] noted subtle elevations in plasma antibodies against myeloid peroxidase (anti-MPO) and proteinase 3 (anti-PR3).

As far as the prediction of asthma is concerned, eosinophils as well as their mediators (e.g. eosinophil cationic protein, peroxidase and protein X) have been studied in infancy in order to identify individuals who are developing chronic disease. In a Norwegian study cohort, wheezing infants had significantly higher levels of serum eosinophil cationic protein compared to controls [18(11)]. Whether concentrations of mediators from eosinophils also predict the chronic disease process remains to be shown. Studies of eosinophils in bronchial biopsies have suggested that increased numbers of eosinophils are risk factors for chronic asthma [19(11)]. So far, none of the various immunological markers has been found suitable for the prediction of atopy or asthma on an individual level.
