Immune response magnitude

IL-2 acts as a critical autocrine growth factor for T-cells, and the magnitude of the T-cell response is largely dependent upon the level of IL-2 produced. IL-2 also serves as a growth factor for activated B-lymphocytes. In addition to promoting proliferation of these cells, IL-2 (as well as some other interleukins) stimulates enhanced antibody production and secretion. In this way, it effectively potentates the humoral immune response. [Pg.245]

There may be no clear dose-response relationship for immune responses, as the magnitude of the response is dependent on the type of reaction of the endogenous immune system, not on the concentration of the foreign compound. However, there may be a relationship between likelihood of a response occurring and size of response with size of exposure and frequency of... [Pg.256]

Synthetic pathways that supposedly avoid the pitfalls of viral delivery systems (see below) have been explored. Both Kaneda and coworkers (Chapter 9) and Sorgi and coworkers (Chapter 8) have been successful in designing viruslike liposomal delivery systems that provide some of the advantages of viral carriers—in other words, cell surface recognition and fusion with target cells (or intracellular compartments, i.e., endosomes, respectively)—without the detrimental immune response that viral systems generate. The efficiency of these systems is still orders of magnitude less than that of viral carriers however, cytotoxic... [Pg.5]
