Ideal reactors, continuously stirred tank reactor liquid phase reaction

Continuous flow stirred tank reactors are normally just what the name implies—tanks into which reactants flow and from which a product stream is removed on a continuous basis. CFSTR, CSTR, C-star, and back-mix reactor are only a few of the names applied to the idealized stirred tank flow reactor. We will use the letters CSTR as a shorthand notation in this textbook. The virtues of a stirred tank reactor lie in its simplicity of construction and the relative ease with which it may be controlled. In addition to processes involving gas-liquid reactions, stirred-tank reactors can also be used for single (liquid)-phase reactions. Moreover, their operation is not limited to the continuous mode, and they can be easily adapted for use in semibatch and batch modes. The absence of a gas phase does not pose important structural and operational differences from those stated earlier for multiphase systems. However, in the case of single-phase operation, the aspect ratio is usually kept lower ( 1) to ensure well mixing of the reactive liquid. Real kinetics data To date, almost all the kinetics data on reaction systems in liquid phase or multiphase with liquid as the continuous phase have been measured in traditional stirred tank reactors. From the results reported in this chapter, it is likely that significant deviations exist in the existing kinetics data.
