Many diseases have been associated with diabetes. In some the association is not justified, and in others a definite cause-effect relationship exists. Whereas there is no reason to assume, as was often done in the past, that syphilis is responsible for the appearance of diabetes, diabetes is almost a constant finding in hemochromatosis. Insulin deficiency and the diabetes that it causes can result from surgical pancreatectomy or from massive destruction of the endocrine pancreas, which occurs in severe pancreatitis, pancreatic lithiasis, or carcinoma of the pancreas. Hyperglycemia and glu-cosuria have been observed in 25% of the patients with carcinoma of the pancreas. 

It was found that the procedures which induced hyperglycemia without appreciably decreasing the utilization of glucose were accompanied by substantial reductions in food intake. Whether the changes are due to definite cause-and-effect relationships has not been established. The observations suggest that normally the urge to eat may be controlled by the concentration of blood glucose.
