In this article, we will examine the frontispiece of the manuscript of a hymn by the Spanish composer Cristobal Galan (c. 1620-1684), entitled Si del alma las alas veloces (Valladolid Cathedral ms. 40/8). It consists of three nested squares framing the title, and two ink-drawn symbols above and below the title. Examined together with the lyrics, these elements reveal a syncretism of hermetic, alchemical images and words in an orthodox Roman Catholic devotional piece...

The Gnostics termed the solar, or rainbow body, the robe of glory — robe meaning a vesture or sheath for the spirit. The poet Bardesanes wrote The Hymn of the Robe of Glory, which tells of the soul s descent into matter and its ultimate re-ascent. The pearl mentioned at the end of the poem, is the pearl of Great Price, the Philosopher s Stone ...

Art, the expression of society, manifests, in its highest soaring, the most advanced social tendencies it is the forerunner and the revealer. Thus the hydroelectric power plant on the Rhine turns the river into a water-power supplier. Heidegger asks us to contrast The Rhine revealed by the power plant with The Rhine revealed by a Holderin hymn of that name (an art work) (Heidegger, 1954, p297). 

It is interesting to note that the Ayrians were the ancestors of many of the cultures of Asia and the Middle East. Their religion was coalesced with those of conquered Indo-Eurpean beliefs and evolved into Hinduism. The Rig Veda, which records some ancient tales of drugs, is a collection of hymns or vedas reminiscent of the Ayrian creed. 

We have certain hymns and services, which we say daily, of laud and thanks to God for His marvellous works. And forms of prayers, imploring His aid and blessing for the illumination of our labors and turning them into good and holy uses. 

Volpone tells Mosca to get rid of her, wondering that the "bold English. . . dare let loose their wives to all encounters " Mosca says that with her face she cannot help but be honest (virtuous). Mosca makes a hymn to the beauty of Corvino s wife, and Volpone resolves to see the lady. A disguise must be designed to deceive the insanely jealous Corvino he guards his wife with ten spies ...

The earliest religious document is a collection of 1,028 hymns called the Rig- Veda, written by Aryans who swept down into India from the North. The first of their four Vedas, it dates bade to at least the second millenium B.C and has been described as "the foundation of modern Hinduism. One hundred and twenty of its verses are devoted to praise of a plant called "Soma, which is characterized as being "rootless, "leafless, "blossomless and "from the mountains. ... 

The hymns of this first book of the Vedas undoubtedly vibrate with ecstasy users are exhalted. "We have drunk the Soma, they say at their height, "we are become Immortals. In Book IX, the gpd Indra drinks Soma— and it inspires him to create the universe ...
