Hydrothermal stable membranes, synthesis

Completely hydrothermally stable intermediate layers were developed (chapter 5). Synthesis routes were developed to realise mesoporous membranes with tailor-made pore-radii ranging from 2 to 10 nm. [Pg.127]

The synthesis and characterisation of silicalite-1 membranes on porous alumina ceramic supports have been described here. The growth of the silicalite-1 membrane could be optimised by controlling the hydrothermal synthesis conditions. It has been shown that by controlling the synthesis conditions it is possible to optimise the growth and structure of silicalite-1 membranes. Thus at lower synthesis temperatures (150 °C), the growth of silicalite inside the macro-pores of the ceramic support is favoured. At higher temperatures (190 °C), thick, well crystallised zeolite layers develop from the surface of the support. A more stable membrane is... [Pg.473]

Because carbon has a natural affinity for adsorption of heavy hydrocarbon species and polar molecules, CMS membranes need to be used at a sufficiently high temperature to eliminate contribution/interference of the adsorption. In contrast, strong adsorption of heavier molecules may be used to separate those species by adsorption as discussed earlier by the SSF mechanism (Rao and Sircar, 1993b). The SSF carbon membranes typically have pore dimensions much greater than those needed for CMS membranes since the separation is based on the adsorbed species effectively blocking permeation of other components (Fuertes, 2000). Carbon membranes are resistant to contaminants such as H2S and are thermally stable and can be used at higher temperatures compared to the polymeric membranes. For the synthesis gas environment, the hydrothermal stability of carbon in the presence of steam will be a concern limiting its operation temperature. [Pg.309]

Titania. Titania powders are used as pigments, catalytic supports, membranes, opacifiers, photocatalysts and fillers in industrial applications . Titania particles have been prepared by a number of methods, such as hydrolysis, sol-gel, microemulsion and hydrothermal synthesis. Titania exists naturally in two tetragonal forms, the metastable phase anatase, and the stable phase rutile. On heat treatment, anatase transforms into rutile. The phase transition temperature depends on the starting materials and the preparation procedure. [Pg.270]
