Washing removes the natural coating of protective oil that gives hair its body and shine. To counter this, shampoos and conditioners contain hydrophobic oils that cling to the surface of hair and remain in place upon rinsing. Dimethicone, shown in our inset, is an artificial oil that contains hydrophobic silicon-oxygen chains and methyl groups. [Pg.828]

Reversed-phase PLC precoated plates are based on silica gel matrices with chemical modifications in such a manner that the accessible polar, hydrophilic silanol groups at the silica gel surface are replaced by nonpolar, hydrophobic alkyl chains via silicon-carbon bonds. For preparative purposes, up to now only PLC precoated RP plates with C-18 modification are available. In the present report we will describe extension of this work to include pyridinyl dichlorosilanes which can be hydrolyzed to polysiloxanes. Ethyl silicate (tetraethoxysilane) is often used without modification as a water-repellent material for concrete and masonry in general. All, or nearly all. the ethoxyl groups are hydrolyzed by the moisture of the air to form cross-linked watcr-rcpcllcnt polymers. The material is applied in desirable thickness, dissolved in some volatile solvent which soon evaporates. Silicone resins which arc partially condensed before application, or even fully condensed, can also be used here. In the latter case, hardness is achieved on evaporation of the solvent.
