Acrylics. Acetone is converted via the intermediate acetone cyanohydrin to the monomer methyl methacrylate (MMA) [80-62-6]. The MMA is polymerized to poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) to make the familiar clear acryUc sheet. PMMA is also used in mol ding and extmsion powders. Hydrolysis of acetone cyanohydrin gives methacrylic acid (MAA), a monomer which goes direcdy into acryUc latexes, carboxylated styrene—butadiene polymers, or ethylene—MAA ionomers. As part of the methacrylic stmcture, acetone is found in the following major end use products acryUc sheet mol ding resins, impact modifiers and processing aids, acryUc film, ABS and polyester resin modifiers, surface coatings, acryUc lacquers, emulsion polymers, petroleum chemicals, and various copolymers (see METHACRYLIC ACID AND DERIVATIVES METHACRYLIC POLYMERS). [Pg.99]

The pelargonic acid by-product is already a useful item of commerce, making the overall process a commercial possibiUty. The 13-carbon polyamides appear to have many of the properties of nylon-11, nylon-12, or nylon-12,12 toughness, moisture resistance, dimensional stabiUty, increased resistance to hydrolysis, moderate melt point, and melt processibiUty. Ferric sulfate (commercial product Fe2 (8O4 )3-H20) contains a minimum of 20 wt % iron(lll). It is available only as a soHd, which must be dissolved immediately before use. The solution must be kept concentrated to avoid premature hydrolysis and precipitation of Fe(OH)2. Such concentrated solutions have low pH values and, thus, prevent hydrolysis but are very corrosive. Both are produced as by-products from the hydrolysis of chlorobenzene [108-90-7] with aqueous sodium hydroxide (68). o-Phenylphenol, ie, l,l-biphenyl-2-ol [90-43-7], particularly as its sodium salt, is widely used as a germicide or fungicide.
