While the main field of application of chemiluminescence (CL) reactions is catalytic processes (e.g., oxidation of liuninol in the presence of metal ions), some noncatalytic reactions are also of great interest on accormt of the high sensitivity they provide. Permanent Hair Colorants. Permanent colorants produce hair coloration that lasts until the hair grows out. Color is formed inside the hair by hydrogen peroxide-induced coupling reactions of colorless dye precursors. A hiU range of shades can be obtained with this system and the permanent or oxidative hair colorants are considered to be the most important class of hair dyes. 

The phenothiazines, chlorpromazine and promethazine, have been described as inhibitors of CCU-induced lipid peroxidation at relatively high concentrations in rat liver microsomes (Slater, 1968). Structural modifications of chlorpromazine were undertaken to try to increase antioxidant activity and maintain molecular lipophilicity. The 2-N-N-dimethyl ethanamine methanesulphonate-substituted phenothiazine (3) was found to be a potent inhibitor of iron-dependent lipid peroxidation. It was also found to block Cu -catalysed oxidation of LDL more effectively than probucol and to protect primary cultures of rat hippocampal neurons against hydrogen peroxide-induced toxicity in vitro (Yu et al., 1992). 

Titanium in the framework of pentasil zeolites induces oxygenation activity with diluted hydrogen peroxide as oxidant, thus constituting a new catalytic system.
