The study of (C3H7)+ losing H2 found the transition state to be cyclic, (CH2CH2CH3)+, with both of the hydrogen atoms to be eliminated attached to the same (penta-coordinated) carbon atom [744]. A potential and a hydrogen ion gradient is created across the inner membrane of mitochondria, bacteria, and chloroplasts by redox reactions. The energy of this proton motive force is translated into ATP synthesis by rotation of the cluster of c subunits of the F , and this rotation is transmitted via the y stalk to the a-B trimers of the F, complex. The catalytic complex contains three a-6 trimers that rotate with transmission of hydronium ions inward through the c subunit complex of the Fo sector. The two b subunits tether the a-6 trimers via the 6 subunit, and the a subunit is fixed, allowing rotation of the c complex, thus rotating the y stalk. [Pg.18]

Abstract. Cross sections for electron transfer in collisions of atomic hydrogen with fully stripped carbon ions are studied for impact energies from 0.1 to 500 keV/u. A semi-classical close-coupling approach is used within the impact parameter approximation. To solve the time-dependent Schrodinger equation the electronic wave function is expanded on a two-center atomic state basis set. The projectile states are modified by translational factors to take into account the relative motion of the two centers. For the processes C6++H(1.s) —> C5+ (nlm) + H+, we present shell-selective electron transfer cross sections, based on computations performed with an expansion spanning all states ofC5+( =l-6) shells and the H(ls) state. [Pg.121]
