Hydrogen Generation Methods

H2 serves as the alternative energy source relative to fossil fuels and biomass [181] because it is clean and environmentally friendly. Hence, catalytic hydrogen generation from water under mild conditions is one of the goals for the organometallic catalysis. One of the hopeful methods is the electrochemical reduction of protons by a hydrogenase mimic. [Pg.65]

The atomic absorption spectrophotometric methods discussed in section 12.10.2.2 [122, 124] has been applied to the determination of selenium in sediments. Itoh et al. [165] and Cutter [122] (section 12.10.2.2) have used hydrogen generation-atomic absorption spectrophotometric techniques to determine selenium in non-saline sediments. Cutter [122] was able to distinguish between selenite, selenate, total selenium and organic selenium in sediments. [Pg.364]

When metal ion M"+ is deposited by the controlled-current method, the electrode potential during the electrolysis changes in the order T, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 in Fig. 5.33 and the next reduction process occurs near the end of the electrolysis. If the solution is acidic and the next reduction process is hydrogen generation, its influence on the metal deposition is not serious. However, if other metal is deposited in the next reduction process, metal M is contaminated with it. In order that two metal ions M"1+ and M "21 can be separated by the controlled-current method, the solution must be acidic and the reduction of hydrogen ion must occur at the potential between the reductions of the two metal ions. An example of such a case is the separation of Cu2+ and Zn2+ in acidic solutions. If two metal ions are reduced more easily than a hydrogen ion (e.g. Ag+ and Cu2+), they cannot be separated by the controlled-current method and the controlled-potential method must be used. [Pg.146]

The effect of platinum has been studied mainly in relation to hydrogen generation from water because it is essential for hydrogen evolution. Similarly, Pt enhances the degradation of the polluting substance (Fig. 9.11).28) The function of Pt is assumed to promote the transfer of the conduction band electron to 02 (Eq. (9.2)). Other metals such as rhodium, palladium and silver are also effective. Copper was studied to replace these expensive metals. However, copper is less effective, and dissolves in water by illumination. Photolysis of 2//-azirines is one generation method of nitrile ylides applicable to intramolecular cycloaddition.70 Another method involves the base-catalyzed 1,3-elimination of hydrogen halide from alkenyl imidoyl halides.
