The furnace. For heating the tube packing, a small electric furnace E is used, similar to that described in the carbon and hydrogen determination. It is 22 cm. in length and 1 5 cm. in diameter. The furnace is maintained at 680 C., as before, by a calibrated Simmerstat and its temperature is checked from time to time with a bimetal pyrometer.

Low hydrogen pressures are favorable for the first two reactions with deeply dissociated intermediates. Hydrogen determines here the direction of the overall reactions, that is, the ratio of aromatic and coke formation. 

An initial assumption is made that the tail-gas stream is composed of nitrogen only. By an elemental nitrogen balance, the first estimate for the flowrate of the tail-gas stream is made. This enables the mass (and then moles) of hydrogen in the tail-gasstream to bedetermined. A mole balance on elemental hydrogen determines the moles of hydrogen added in the make-up water. This figure is used to determine the unknown feed stream of make-up water. Hence, all feed streams are defined. 

Progesterone, a hormone, is made up of 80.2% carbon, 10.18% oxygen, and 9.62% hydrogen. Determine the empirical formula of progesterone. 

Polypropylene, a well-known plastic, is composed of 85.63% carbon and 14.37% hydrogen. Determine its empirical formula.
