Table 1 shows the relative production of CO2 per tonne of metal produced. As shown, the largest producer of CO2 is indeed the iron and steel industry, but it should be noted that is primarily because of the high consumption of iron and steel. Lighter metals, such as aluminum, will likely be used as a replacement for steel in hybrid automobiles and in low-density building materials. So there could be an increase in CO2 gas production as more of the lighler density metals are consumed to replace steel. [Pg.49]
