We have presented data which suggests that we can determine the usefulness of a recombinant protein before we have an appropriate ligand in hand. These results are an encouraging start in our attempt to predict the binding competency of recombinant orphan nuclear receptors. Obviously, a considerable amount of work needs to be completed before a great deal of confidence can be placed in this type of predictive strategy. At present more than 20 human nuclear receptors have been identified and the number is certain to grow. Biophysical characterization of other nuclear receptors should aid in the construction and refinement of a database for use in fiirther predictive studies.

The 48 members of the superfamily of human nuclear receptors include, for example, those of the thyroid hormone type, retinoick, estrogens, nerve growth factor IB, steroidogenic factor, stem cell nudear factor, and so on.
