Human movement measurement tools

In both the study and practice, performance of neuromuscular systems has been characterized along one or two dimensions of performance at a time. However, human subsystems function within a multi-dimensional performance space. ROM/EOM, strength, movement speed, and endurance capacities are not only interdependent, but may also vary uniquely within individuals. Multiple measurements are necessary to characterize a person s performance capacity space, and performance capacity is dependent on the task to be performed. Therefore, both the individual and the task must be considered when selecting measurement tools and procedures [Chaffin et al., 1999]. [Pg.1259]

In this section we will discuss three of the more common methods used to collect human movement data electrogoniometers, electromagnetic tracking devices, and optoelectronic measuring systems. Of these distinctly different measuring tools, optoelectronic systems are the most common registration method, and therefore most of this section will focus on video-based motion analysis. [Pg.117]

In this chapter, current studies in the frame of human movement that use modern technology-based tools and engineering approaches are discussed and the results of these studies are reported supported by some examples. The importance of kinematics for wireless application will be introduced first and some of the underlying mathematical principles on biokinematics will be highlighted in detail. A review of measuring and analysis methods will shortly be introduced together with examples of measurement-related applications. [Pg.526]
