The Human Genome Project was launched in 1990. It is a US 3 billion project involving 350 laboratories around the world. In 2001, a draft copy of the sequence of the three billion base pairs was published. By April 2003,99% of the human genome had been sequenced. The project goals are as follows ...

Biomedical research is in the middle of a significant transition. The transition is driven by two primary factors the massive increase in the amount of DNA sequence information, and the development of technologies to exploit its use. Over the last few years, more than 30 organisms have had their genomes completely sequenced and another 100 or so will follow close behind (see http //www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov for a list).
