Hot, brewing

Elder blossom tea can be added to the bath to soften and soothe the skin. Elder flowers can be brewed into a tea, strained and added to the bath alternatively, take 2 handfuls of elder blossoms, tie them into a washcloth and place in the tub. Run the bath water quite hot and turn off when it reaches the right level. Allow the blossom-filled cloth to "brew" in the tub. When the temperature has cooled down enough, immerse yourself in the tub, use the cloth to wash your skin as you bathe in the wonderful properties of elder. This is very beneficial for nervous people. [Pg.64]

For a week or two at most, you can obtain the right amount of stimulation with one, then two cups of coffee brewed from beans that have been crushed with gradually increasing force and infused with hot water. For another week, by decreasing the amount of water used, by pulverizing the coffee even more finely, and by infusing the grounds with cold water, you can continue to obtain the same cerebral power. ... [Pg.168]

Most alkaloids exist in nature not in their free-base form but rather as the salt of naturally occurring acids known as tannins, a group of phenol-based organic acids that have complex structures. The alkaloid salts of these acids are usually much more soluble in hot water than in cold water. The caffeine in coffee and tea exists in the form of the tannin salt, which is why coffee and tea are more effectively brewed in hot water. As Figure 12.19 relates, tannins are also responsible for the stains caused by these beverages. [Pg.407]

Caffeine is present in coffee, tea, and chocolate. These plant-derived beverages and foods also contain the other methylxanthines, which some scientists say serve as defense chemicals for leaves and berries produced in climates where there is no winter to kill off chewing bugs. Tea contains mostly caffeine, with small amounts of theophylline and theobromine, but tea is a weaker plant extract than the stronger brew, coffee. Theobromine is the primary methylxanthine found in cocoa, which also contains a small amount of caffeine per cup. Caffeine content ranges from as little as 5 mg in a cup of hot cocoa to 300 mg in 6 oz (177 ml) of espresso. Colas have about 50 mg per 12 fl oz (355 ml). [Pg.85]

Brewing a cup of coffee. Hot liquid water and solid ground coffee beans are contacted. Soluble constituents of the beans are transferred from the solid phase to a liquid solution (coffee), and then the residual solids (grounds) are filtered from the solution. The operation of dissolving a component of a solid phase in a liquid solvent is referred to as leaching. [Pg.237]
