Mammals are hardly unique in possessing hormonal signaling systems. Insects and nematode worms have highly developed systems for hormonal regulation, with fundamental mechanisms similar to those in mammals. Plants, too, use hormonal signals to coordinate the activities of their various tissues (Chapter 12). The study of hormone action is not as advanced in plants as in animals, but we do know that some mechanisms are shared. To illustrate the structural diversity and range of action of mammalian hormones, we consider representative examples of each major class listed in Table 23-1. 

It is significant that in 1988, the Annual Review of Plant Physiology added and Plant Molecular Biology to its title. Year by year the numbers of plant molecular biologists has risen as the identification and study of hormone regulated genes has become the fashion of the age. New techniques have made questions posable that were previously unanswerable.

It appears that cyclic AMP does not mediate the action of GA (83). Two reports (85, 86) rule out the involvement of cyclic adenosine 3 ,5 -monophosphate and adenylate cyclase in the hormonal regulation of plant growth processes. Although barley aleurone cells metabolize GA s, attempts to isolate GA-binding proteins have not been successful (84).

I believe agricultural chemistry in the next century will enter a new era in which the science of Plant Pharmacology will be developed. From knowledge of the mode of action of the plant hormones a series of compounds and combinations of these will be formulated to control and regulate plant growth and development, for human needs.
