Homelessness

Several considerations are involved. First is a preference for consumer sovereignty, allowing recipients to choose how to spend. Second, being a consumer or a producer of a particular commodity is a poor indicator of whether assistance is deserved. Eveiyone from the poorest residents (but not the homeless) to the richest Americans are residential electricity consumers. Third, commodity-specific policies tend more to aid producers in the industry than consumers. Politicians often dispute these appraisals and institute subsidies on equity grounds. [Pg.1103]

The importance of FAK is underlined by the finding that cells expressing a constitutively active form survive in suspension even though they are homeless. Here, the protein kinase is active regardless of the failure to make contact with an extracellular matrix. Rescue from apoptosis also occurs when cells express constitutively activated oncogenic forms of Ras or Src and thus activate Plj-kinase and the MAP kinase pathway. Unlike FAK, these not only prevent apoptosis but also promote proliferative signals that result in tumor formation. [Pg.260]

Russia combined. Peculiarly enough, the British had taken in more refugees than the United States. Among those who had escaped from behind the Iron Curtain were men who would die rather than renounce freedom. And now that they were on the sunny side of the Iran Curtain, many of them wandered homeless. [Pg.208]

Trying to find a place to shower was another challenge when I was homeless. Sometimes I found showers in office buildings. Quite often I showered in a building where I went for body work. Or I would go to a friend s, or to the cabin or condo where my mother was staying, just long enough to take a quick shower. [Pg.82]

Fears of homelessness lie dormant in most people, until health or resources are in jeopardy. Any catastrophic or chronic illness can bring those fears and the possibility of homelessness closer to the surface. People with MCS and electromagnetic fields sensitivity (EMFS) are particularly vulnerable. Christina Jacobs is one example, and a model for facing the reality of homelessness with hope and perseverance. She has lived out of her car for most of seven years. [Pg.177]

I m a human being with strong points and weak points just like everybody else. Sometimes I feel like Pm a cross between a homeless person and a camper, but I don t have a stove or any frills. I have experienced great extremes in my life and have developed a deep level of human understanding and compassion. [Pg.178]

In the past, methamphetamine use and abuse in the United States was most prevalent in individuals who needed to remain awake and alert due to the nature of their occupations— long-haul truckers, for example—and in some fringe members of society. Today, however, it is predominantly used by white males in their 20s and 30s and is becoming more popular with teenagers at dance clubs and raves. For these reasons, methamphetamine can be considered a club drug. Methamphetamine use is also increasing among homeless people, prostitutes, and runaway youths. [Pg.26]

Dennis Paui has been an educator for over twenty years. He taught for eleven years in a one-room school, working with students in grades K-8. He also has served as a special education teacher in a school for homeless students, and as a teacher for acute care adolescent hospital programs. [Pg.3]
