Home pond water

Freshwater turtles home to their pond when experimentally displaced. Painted turtles, Chrysemyspicta, homed from 100 m, but not from 1.6 km (Emlen, 1969). They use chemical cues painted turtles discriminate chemical cues from their home ponds and other ponds. Males and females prefer water from their home pond to that from other ponds (Quinn and Graves, 1998). The Eastern long-necked turtle, Chelodina longicolUs, of southestern Australia uses solar cues during migration between a permanent lake and an ephemeral swamp, as... [Pg.70]

Amphibians have been shown to discriminate the odor of their home pond from other mud or water odors (Forester and Wisnieski 1991 Grubb 1973, 1976 McGregor and Teska 1989 Ogurtsov and Bastakov 2001). In a two-way choice apparatus, an animal chooses between mud or water from the home pond and some control mud or water from a different source. This experiment tests the ability to home by chemical cues, one aspect of orientation in space use newts, frogs or toads, depending on animals available. [Pg.148]

In an initial series of tests using the olfactometer (Grubb 1973a), reproductively active male B. woodhousei and P. clarki, as well as both male and female P. streckeri, moved toward the chemical cues of water from home ponds rather than those from the water in foreign ponds. Neither H. chrysoscelis nor Scaphiopus hurteri demonstrated chemosensory orientation. [Pg.274]

Disulfoton enters the environment primarily during its use as an insecticide/acaricide in crops and vegetables, and in homes and gardens. Other important pathways for disulfoton s entry into the environment are the disposal of liquid disulfoton wastes into soil evaporation pits, ditches, ponds (Winterlin et al. 1989), and hazardous waste sites. Thus, soil is the environmental medium most likely to be contaminated with disulfoton. The processes that may transport disulfoton from soil to other environmental media include leaching to groundwater, runoff to surface water, and absorption by plants (Holden 1986 Mostaghimi et al. 1993 Nash 1974 Plumb 1991 Sanborn et al. 1977 ... [Pg.143]

Water from a lake, river or a pond has to travel a long way, before it reaches the taps at home. [Pg.162]

Water-filled containers are a common source of some kinds of mosquitoes. The proximity of those containers to the home result in a situation where the resident is most susceptible to the bites from mosquitoes produced on his or her own property. Use of repellents, bed nets, or other standard tools of personal protection may not make sense if the problem can be solved by eliminating, draining, or treating containers within the individual s control. Other kinds of mosquitoes that develop at the edge of ponds, streams, or in ground pools may present a problem more difficult for the individual to solve. Modification of those sites can reduce their productivity, but such measures may often be beyond the capabilities of an individual. [Pg.333]
