Turtle, painted

Freshwater turtles home to their pond when experimentally displaced. Painted turtles, Chrysemyspicta, homed from 100 m, but not from 1.6 km (Emlen, 1969). They use chemical cues painted turtles discriminate chemical cues from their home ponds and other ponds. Males and females prefer water from their home pond to that from other ponds (Quinn and Graves, 1998). The Eastern long-necked turtle, Chelodina longicolUs, of southestern Australia uses solar cues during migration between a permanent lake and an ephemeral swamp, as... [Pg.70]

Amphibian endocrine disruption is of special interest to humans. The estrogen found in the painted turtle is identical to that found circulating in the human bloodstream and the endocrine disruptors that threaten wildlife populations have also been shown to be jeopardizing human reproductionAccordingly, animal studies on endocrine disrupting properties of toxic chemicals are relevant to understanding human responses to these chemicals. Pesticide mixtures have been shown to be powerful endocrine disruptors in numerous other animal studiesJ16 Illustrative examples follow. [Pg.218]

Finally, the arrow was feathered with two or three trimmed feathers of the eagle, owl, hawk, or other bird. These were glued and bound in place with sinew. The glue used was made from shell of a soft-shell turtle, deer hoofs, or chippings from a rawhide. Between the points where the feathers were fastened were painted bands of color, generally black and red. These colors represented night and day and were a. symbol of precision. [Pg.58]

Jollcoeur and Moslmann studied the applicability of principal component analysis to size and shape variation In the shells of Midland Painted Turtles, claiming that only multivariate statistical techniques could account for all of the variation jointly and thus provide a unified analytical approach. The work presented here examines the suitability of principal component analysis for particle shape analysis. [Pg.340]
