Breakdown of protective oxide films on many metals, e.g., aluminum, requires that environmental stresses exceed some threshold condition. Aluminum is likely to rapidly pit when exposed to high chloride concentrations at humidity levels sufficiently high to adsorb several mono-layers of moisture.
