The success of our bone substitute in rabbit tibia was first reported in 1986 on the International Science section of CNN cable news and in the Los Angeles Times. The CNN version depicted rabbits with pins removed running around out doors in the grass and in their cages. This report attracted widespread attention and interest (Figs. 10-12). Most of these surgeries were done by Dr. Paul Capano with the assistance of Dr. Lester Matthews and Dr. Sharon Hoffman. [Pg.329]

Vitamin C is suspected of being an antiviral agent, although this is an issue not yet fully resolved (Hoffman, 1999, p. 49). Anyway, it is noted to act against the common cold (caused by a virus) as per Linus Pauling s work. It has also been noted to enhance the utilization of folic acid by one or another biochemical conversions, and inasmuch as folic acid is considered an anticancer agent, so may vitamin C. [Pg.195]

Based on in vivo experimental results reported, vitamin C can also be viewed as an inhibitor for the key enzymes involved in carbohydrate metabolism or glycolysis, including lactate dehydrogenase, which is involved in cancer cell metabolism (Hoffman, 1999, p. 395). The inference is that vitamin C is an anticancer agent, as advanced by Pauling and Hoffer. [Pg.196]

Recently, there have been two extensive reviews of the role of polyunsaturated fatty acids in the diet. Hoffman and Forster (1981) discussed the influence of dietary linoleic acid on blood pressure regulation-particularly in relation to salt-loaded individuals. In addition, the mechanism of the hypochol-esterolaemic effects of polyunsaturated fatty acids was discussed by Paul et aL (1980). These authors classified the hypocholesterolaemic effect as being due to reduced absorption of cholesterol, redistribution of cholesterol from blood to tissues, reduced cholesterol synthesis and increased excretion of cholesterol or its catabolites. These various factors have all been involved in the hypocholesterolaemic effect but the evidence is equivocal in each case. Other sources of information on dietary polyunsaturated fatty acids are Vergroesen (1975) and Kunau and Holman (1977). [Pg.529]

Estimates of equilibrium melting temperatures of PCL crystallites were made, for various binary and ternary systems, with the aid of Hoffman-Weeks plots. The observed melting points of PCL were between 55 ° C and 65 ° C and varied by about 3 °C with changes in from 38 °C to 48 °C. From the melting-point depressions, as a function of composition and pressure-volume temperature data, Kim and Paul estimated equation-of-state parameters. During the course of this study Kim and Paul determined specific volume data for PCL at a series of hydrostatic pressures (Fig.51) [87]. [Pg.163]
