Hoechst agents

A number of studies of lexitropsins and Hoechst agents make use of ab initio calculations to complement the experimental and molecular modeling results. Due to the large size of most of these molecules, it is necessary to perform fragment-wise calculations if a larger basis set is to be used. For smaller systems, the whole molecule can be subjected to geometry optimization. 

It was thought that in order to investigate further the binding of the Hoechst agent to DNA, one must determine its optimum geometry by theoretical calculations and dock the molecule into the minor groove.60...

In order to circumvent this problem, there has been significant activity directed toward the search for a less environmentally toxic and more selective oxidizing agent than chromium. For example, Hoechst has patented a process which uses organorhenium compounds. At a 75% conversion, a mixture of 86% of 2-methyl-l,4-naphthoquinone and 14% 6-methyl-l,4-naphthoquinone was obtained (60). Ceric sulfate (61) and electrochemistry (62,63) have also been used. 

PPS resins must compete with PEI and phenoHcs. There are two domestic manufacturers of poly(phenylene sulfide) Phillips and Fortron Industries. Worldwide there is currently large overcapacity (Table 15). Four Japanese companies, ie, Toso Susteel, a joint venture of Toso/Hodogaya Chemical Toray Toprene, a joint venture of Toto Kasei/Toren Petrochemical and Kureha Chemical have a combined capacity of 82,500 t. U.S. agents sell their materials in the U.S. markets General Electric sells for Toso Susteel Soltex Polymer, part of Solvay, Belgium, sells for Toprene Hoechst-Celanese sells for Kureha. Prices for PPS resins and compounds range from 8.80/kg for unreinforced resin to 3.30/kg for 65% filled resins. 

Reduction of polymer flammability is of broad interest for applications ranging from plastics to textiles. For polyesters, given their inherent instability towards water at elevated temperatures, and the high temperatures of manufacture, many classes of flame-retardant (FR) agents, including most halogen-containing materials, are impractical. Phosphate esters, capable of incorporation into the polymer backbone, were pioneered by Hoechst AG, and continue to be the materials of choice [84, 85],... 

The Wacker-Hoechst process has been studied in great detail and in all textbooks it occurs as the example of a homogeneous catalyst system illustrating nucleophilic addition to alkenes. Divalent palladium is the oxidising agent and water is the oxygen donor according to the equation ... 

A UV laser is needed for exciting the blue-fluorescing agents, 4, 6-diamidino-2-phenyhndole (DAPI) and Hoechst 33342, which are DNA-intercalating stains, and for indo-1, a fluorescent calcium chelator dye. Violet diode lasers that are offered in some newer instruments accommodate fluorochromes such as Cascade Blue, Pacific Blue, and cyan fluorescent protein, and are also capable of exciting DAPI (Shapiro and Perlmutter 2001 Telford et al., 2003).
