Historic structures preservation

Historic Preservation. A generic term that encompasses all aspects of the professional and public concern related to the maintenance of a historic structure, site, or element in its current condition, as originally constructed, or with the additions and alterations determined to have acquired signihcance over time. [Pg.636]

Overview of Weathering and Implications for Preserving Historic Structures... [Pg.292]

The various topics discussed in this book have up to this point been arranged as far as possible on the basis of chemical structure compounds that contain one oxygen and one nitrogen atom have, for example, as a general rule preceded those that contain two nitrogen atoms. The fact that virtually all of the entities that follow show CNS activity combined with the circumstance that phenothiazines comprise a large part of this section require a departure from that approach. The serendipitous discovery of the antipsychotic activity of the phenothiazines in the early 1950s virtually opened the modern era of medicinal chemistry. These will thus be discussed at the outset to preserve historical perspective. [Pg.532]

The official open door policy with the goal of increased attendance presents other problems and challenges to public institutions. How can museums and historical societies charged with the preservation of the past balance the growing need for public participation in educational functions and maintain the stability of their collections How can visitor numbers be increased in a historic house structure with limited space accommodation and often difficult access Unsupervised crowds increase the possibility of theft, vandalism, and handling of objects. [Pg.255]

Contact architectural conservators, historic preservation agencies, FEMA, and/or structural engineers before cleanup, especially for buildings on the National Register of Historic Places. [Pg.618]

High initial bond strengths are relatively easy to achieve with the type of adhesives commonly used in the rehabilitation and repair of modem and historic timber structures. However, maintaining good bond durability in some situations is comparatively more difficult with these adhesives. For instance, while adhesives such as phenolic, resorcinolic, and aminoplastic resins produce durable bonds in EN 1995-1-1 [4] service classes 1, 2 and 3, the typically used on-site polymerized adhesives do not form bonds of adequate durability in service class 3, when bonding some preservative treated timbers, in situations in which the adhesive is bonded to dense hardwoods, or when bonding wood to non-wood materials, such as FRP profiles, steel rods, etc. [Pg.292]

However, it should be noted that the concept of carbohydrates as chiral synthons has always fascinated sugar chemists as the excellent 1972 review by Inch will attest 42). Thus in order to preserve historical perspective three antecedents for the use of sugars in asymmetric syntheses are noted in Scheme 1. First is Wolfrom s proof of the structure of (-t-)-alanine by synthesis from D-glucosamine 102). Second is the synthesis of the optically pure mandelic acid derivatives from 2,3-4,5-di-O-isopropylidene-fl/tfeAy o-D-arabinose (1) by Bonner (9), and third is Lemieux s synthesis of ethanol-l-d from diacetone glucose (6 a, Scheme 2) via the deuterated xylose (2) (57). [Pg.3]
