Histomoniasis is caused by the protozoan, Histomonas meleagridis, found in the hver and cecum of birds. The protozoans from the cecum are more infective than those from the fiver. Transmission primarily occurs by ingestion of the eggs of the cecal worm, Hetemkisgallinarium, which carries the protozoan and can survive several years in the soil. [Pg.268]
