Histological and Electron Microscopical Observations

Histological and electron microscopical observations of the liver cells in the guinea pig at earliest times when induction was already detectable showed no marked differences from normal [35]. No evidence of cell multiplication or nuclear changes was observed even after 2 days. This result is of importance because it suggests that the hepatic cells 

One should also mention the cytological changes that appeared in the liver of phenobarbital-treated rats. Phenobarbital is normally a weak inducer of ALA-synthetase. It induced a fourfold increase in microsomal NADPH cjTochrome reductase by 6 to 8 hours, although electron microscope pictures did not reveal an increase in the endoplasmic reticulum [Kuriyama et ah, 64] until several days later, (see page 104, Section C). 

One may conclude from cytological and electron microscopic studies that actively inducing chemicals like AIA and DDC may induce sufficiently rapidly and at concentrations sufficiently low so that cell damage is probably a secondary result.
