Further measurements performed by Vajo et al. [36], Barkhordarian et al. [95], and Bosenberg et al. [96] confirmed that much lower pressures and temperatures are sufficient for hydrogenation of these compounds. Superficially, eqs. (3.1.11-12) seem to imply that diagonalization could be achieved in n(n - l)/2 steps. However, every time a rotation is used to set a specific At to zero, previously zeroed elements in the same row and column will be destroyed. This observation also hints at the proper selection of which element to eliminate in each step It is wasteful to spend operations on a rotation to eliminate a very small element which will anyway later get destroyed, so we should eliminate one of the largest elements. The best choice is usually the largest element however, for any but the smallest matrices, it takes more time to search for the largest element than to perform the rotation. Common practice is to simply loop over all elements in a predetermined order, but to slap the rotation for elements which fall below a certain threshold. The simulations nested in the coarse grid METRAS results agree in a similar way with the reference simulation in the second half of the simulation time (after about 21 h i.e. 18 CET of 29 August 2003). At this time the performance of simulation 5 is somewhat closer to the other nested simulations than before. This might be a hint that the nesting becomes less relevant and the situation is more locally driven. With LA, MC-ICP-MS isotope ratio measurements can be performed in just a few minutes per sample as compared with the several hours per sample required for TIMS analysis. In addition, LA-MC-ICP-MS can yield spatially resolved isotope ratio characterization. Thus, provenance studies of ceramic paints, glazes, and slips in situ by LA-MC-ICP-MS measurement of lead and/or other isotope ratios are obvious areas for future development. Hints of the potential of this approach are highlighted in a recent study by Huntley [74], which showed that interaction on different spatial scales can be detected via elemental analysis of paste together with lead isotope analysis of glaze paints on Zuni glazed wares. [Pg.836]

Measuring just the impedance in the wound would lead to several interferences caused by e.g. the temperature and the pH value. However, a change of these parameters also gives a hint for an ongoing infection in the wound. Combining this information would lead to a sufficient specificity of a wound sensor. Miniaturized sensor concepts already exist for all mentioned parameters. Characterization of wounds in their environment is performed for example for pH value and temperature whereas because of the hmited availability of reliable wound models the development for impedance is still in progress. Our wound model environment includes cellular constituents of the wound fluid which can be measured with commercial 2-electrode setups (Roche) for cultivated cells. By using a self-made adapter we connect these electrode wells with an impedance analyzer (ScioSpec ISX-3). [Pg.61]

Early calorimetric investigations were performed on pupae of the wax moth Galleria mellonella by means of a differential adiabatic setup [92]. Galleria represents an important pest for weak honeybee colonies where it feeds on wax, honey, pollen and other organic material. Individual pupae were kept in small Dewar flasks of 5 cm for measurements of 10 to 60 min, which were repeated in regular intervals through the whole pupal metamorphosis of about 7 days. The calorimetric experiments alternated with manometry (indirect calorimetry) to evaluate the RQ and to find hints about the type of metabolism. Heat dissipation was monitored by electrical heating of the reference flask to keep the temperature difference between both Dewars close to zero. In this way composite curves for male and female moths and both direct and indirect calorimetry were established. [Pg.428]
