High-Visibility Safety Apparel

ANSI/ISEA 107-2004 and ANSI/ISEA 107-2010 — American National Standard for High-Visibility Safety Apparel and Headwear. 

A good source to use to learn more about high-visibility (retro-reflective) clothing is the Federal Manual on Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD). Chapter 6E Flagger Control and specifically Section 6E.02 High-Visibility Safety Apparel of the MUTCD provides some detailed information on the Performance Classes that would meet the ANSI standards.

It might be hard to part with your most comfortable hi-vis sweatshirt or the hi-vis vest that s kept you safe through a particularly close call, but high-visibility safety apparel needs to replaced on a regular basis in order to keep you safe on the jobsite and protect those around you. 

When exposed to vehicular traffic, employees should wear high-visibility safety apparel. 

A Look beyond vests for safety apparel. T-shirts, sweatshirts or jackets may be more suitable for the job. A high visibility shirt or jacket which serves as the work wear itself may be a better option than safety i arel that fits over clothes — like a vest. Plus, unlike a shirt or pullover sweatshirt, a vest has to be fastened closed to provide complete safety. 

To combine safety and comfort, some manufacturers have focused on incorporating ANSI 107 high-visibility standards into new apparel designs that allow for layering and flexibility. 

High-visibility jackets, sweatshirts and t-shirts are available though most safety and industrial distributors and can also be found in many work wear stores.
