High speed milling

Pulverit planetaiy mills are available from Geoscience Inc. Highspeed planetary-baU mills can be used to perform rapid tests to sinmlate ball milhng of materials [Vock, DECHEMA-Monogr, 69, HI-8 (1972)]. The size of high-speed mills will be much smaller than the size of same-capacity ball mills [Bradley, S. Afr Mech. Eng., 22, 129 (1972)]. 

Pin MiUs In contrast to peripheral hammers of the rigid or swing types, there is a class of high-speed mills having pin breakers in the grinding circuit. These may oe on a rotor with stator pins between circular rows of pins on the rotor disk, or they may be on rotors operating in opposite directions, thereby securing an increased differential of speed. A certain proportion of fluoroelastomers is used in latex form. The compounding techniques used are similar to those used for standard latexes i.e., solid ingredients are first dispersed in water with the use of surface active agents and liquid ingredients are prepared as emulsions prior to their addition to the latex. The dispersions of solids are prepared in ball mills or high-speed mills (e.g., Kady). 

The effectiveness of the high-speed mill is dependent on the viscosity of the mill base. The mill base must be thick enough to avoid turbulence since shearing and attrition efficiency is necessary for the effective use of the mill. There is a need for some dilatancy of the mill base. The mill base must be pulled in from the edge of the tank into the blade. The side of the tank and the shaft should be scraped to make sure that no pigment is caked on the side after all the pigment has been added.

The use of antifoams is of special importance for the preparation of water-based paints [202]. Although foam problems also occur in textile and paper industries, there are some special features for paints. First, foam is formed in machines with high and medium shear rates, such as high-speed mills. The presence of a considerable foam volume inhibits the process and considerably reduces the useful load volume of the machine. Besides, foam inhibits the operation of the filling equipment. Problems also occur when paints are applied to a surface, especially using effective sprays, dipping methods and foam-curtain devices. The main reason of foam formation are surfactants used to stabilize aqueous latex dispersions. Thus, nonionic surfactants, instead of anionics, are preferred as they form less foam of low stability.

The high-speed mill (up to 6000 revolutions per minute) consists of a conic rotor and its respective stator. The gap between rotor and stator is adjustable and is normally approximately 0.25-0.50 mm. Any variation of the gap affects the sizes of the bitumen globules (particles) and, hence, the quality of the bitumen emulsion. 

Precise conventional methods, such as high-speed milling or eroding, are creating surfaces that either don t have to be reworked at all or where the rework is mainly limited to surface effects so no measurable dimensional change is caused by it. 

So, the clarity of the compound is effected by the dispersion of the finely divided nucleators determined by the mixing time in a high speed mill.
