This book contains a wealth of information and should serve as an excellent resource to high school students, undergraduates, graduates, postdoctoral fellows, and various people thinking about career development in bioengineering and biotechnology. 

Advances in science and engineering have never been completely uniform, or followed an orderly development. High school and undergraduate students frequently compound the problem by making believe that all science not only had an orderly development, but that there remains little of significance left unknown. The truth is that science advances by fits and jerks, with ideas propounded by individuals who see the world in a different light. Frequently, they face adversity when putting their ideas forward. 

In the annotated lists of green chemistry books given below, the student levels for which the books are appropriate are indicated by the following abbreviations HS, high school UN, undergraduate nonmajor UM, undergraduate major GR, graduate. 

The American Chemical Society (ACS) offers a number of resources that supplement the curriculum. ACS collaborated with the Royal Society of Chemistry and the Gesellschaft Deutscher Chemiker to produce Introduction to Green Chemistry (18 a collection of six units that present key concepts in green chemistry. High-school students are the target audience for this resource, whose units incorporate hands-on activities such as a Vitamin C clock reaction. The ACS lab manual Greener Approaches to Undergraduate Chemistry Experiments (13) is available in both Spanish and Chinese. 

The ES H Division maintains LANL s Automated Chemical Inventory System (ACIS). Only those personnel authorized by their supervisor, who are knowledgeable of the effects of hazardous chemicals, can procure and receive chemicals. All chemical containers must have an owner, and this owner must be a qualified chemical w orker. Individuals with appointments of less than 1 year, visitors, undergraduate, and high school students may not be chemical owners. The immediate supervisor for the latter classifications of workers is the chemical owner. 

Alison Williams started her scientific career as a high school student when she worked part-time at the Ohio State Agricultural Research and Development Center in Wooster, Ohio. She subsequently received her undergraduate degree from Wesleyan University, and then her master s degree and Ph.D. in biophysical chemistry. Dr. Williams has taught at Swarthmore College, Wesleyan University, and is now a faculty member at Princeton University. 

By definition, iGEM teams are comprised mainly of undergraduates (this includes Masters students), although high-school students are also welcome. Ph.D. students, research associates, professors. 

There is no one right audience to target in a poster rather, the correct audience will vary with the conference. Some conferences are primarily for experts others, such as the national meeting of the American Chemical Society, attract a wide range of individuals, from high school teachers and undergraduate students to... 

In two weeks, I am going to be giving a talk to juniors in high school and their parents. These are the kids that Dr. Hrabowski and the staff have identified already at the high school sophomore year, and we invite them to campus to expose them to our program. We tell the students and their parents that they do not have to wait until they have their postdoc and start at a faculty postion before they make a serious contribution in science. They can do it as an undergraduate. I give them examples of students that have done that.
