High-resolution NMR spectroscopy of solid polymers

In this article, an overview is given of this field, with an emphasis on the development of new or inq)roved techniques and methodologies. In order to narrow the scope, only solution and solid state NMR techniques are covered. The polymeric systems chosen as examples are taken from the literature and particularly from the papers included in this synposium volume (42-71). Also included are selected preprints taken firom tiie papers presented at the international symposium on High Resolution NMR Spectroscopy of Polymers held at the ACS National Meeting in April, 2001 in San Diego, CA (72-87). 

One of the important applications of Raman spectroscopy (with IR spectroscopy) is the determination of the configuration and conformation of polymer chains in the solid state. As will be discussed in Chapter 6, high-resolution NMR spectroscopy of polymers in solution is a powerful technique for determining stereoregularity, but it is not useful for solids. The applications of NMR spectroscopy to polymeric solids will be discussed in Chapter 7. 

IR and visible near-IR absorption, NMR, ESR and X-ray diffraction. It was emphasized that solid-state high-resolution NMR spectroscopy is a powerful tool for the structure analysis of polydiacetylenes. THY is particularly attractive because of its potential for forming the polydiacetylene ladder polymer. 

Volume 26 of Annual Reports on NMR Spectroscopy serves to evince the fecundity of NMR in five distinct areas of scientific interest. These include food science, structural studies of peptides and polypeptides in the solid state by 15N NMR, high-resolution NMR as applied to polymer chemistry, the uses of cation NMR, in particular 87Rb, in studies on living systems, and finally, azo dyestuffs as studied by multinuclear NMR. 

By way of examples, we have attempted to illustrate the utility of high resolution NMR spectroscopy to the study of solid polymers. Although we have only presented applications of C NMR, other spin 1/2 nuclei ( N,...
