Plain-orifice atomizers are widely used for injecting liquids into a flow stream of air or gas. The injection may occur in a co-flow, a contra-flow, or a cross-flow stream. The best known application of plain-orifice atomizers is perhaps diesel injectors. This type of injectors is designed to provide a pulsed or intermittent supply of fuel to the combustion zone for each power stroke of the piston. As the air in the combustion zone is compressed by the piston to a high pressure, a very high pressure (83-103 MPa) is required to allow the fuel to penetrate into the combustion zone and disintegrate into a well-atomized spray. 

The product stream is not concentrated further at this location, but is compressed into high-pressure gas cylinders for shipment to the liquefaction site. The compressor used to charge the cylinders to 2200 psi operates intermittently, controlled by the surge volume pressure on its suction side. A diaphram-type compressor is used to prevent contamination or loss of product. 

Air scouring is an intermittent operation with fairly high instantaneous demand. Superficial air flow rates (standard conditions) are between 1.0 and 1.5 m min The requited pressure is only 0.5 or 0.7 bar, while compressed plant air is usually available... 

Most uses of plant air are intermittent. Design frequently provides an intake filter, a buffer tank for compressed air, and a set of pressure switches to take the compressor on and off load. The buffer tank should be large enough to prevent excessive cycling of the compressor, and the compressor should be capable of pressures high enough above the minimum header supply pressure to provide off-line periods of reasonable length.
