The synthesis of the high molecular weight polymer from chlorotrifluoroethylene [79-38-9] has been carried out in bulk (2 >—21 solution (28—30), suspension (31—36), and emulsion (37—41) polymerisation systems using free-radical initiators, uv, and gamma radiation. Emulsion and suspension polymers are more thermally stable than bulk-produced polymers. Polymerisations can be carried out in glass or stainless steel agitated reactors under conditions (pressure 0.34—1.03 MPa (50—150 psi) and temperature 21—53°C) that require no unique equipment. [Pg.394]

The chain extension step may then take place in the water phase. Hydrazine and ethylene diamine are commonly used chain extenders for waterborne urethane dispersions. The isocyanates react with the diamine chain extenders much faster than with the water, thus forming polyurea linkages and building a high molecular weight polymer. More detailed information regarding the synthesis and process of making waterborne polyurethane dispersions is found in Dieterich s review article [58]. [Pg.789]

The nucleophilic aromatic substitution reaction for the synthesis of poly(arylene ether ketone)s is similar to that of polysulfone, involving aromatic dihalides and aromatic diphenolates. Since carbonyl is a weaker electron-withdrawing group titan sulfonyl, in most cases, difluorides need to be used to afford high-molecular-weight polymers. Typically potassium carbonate is used as a base to avoid the... [Pg.340]

In polyester synthesis via ring-opening polymerizations, metal catalysts are often used. For medical applications of polyesters, however, there has been concern about harmful effects of the metallic residues. Enzymatic synthesis of a metal-free polyester was demonstrated by the polymerization of l,4-dioxan-2-one using Candida antarctica lipase (lipase CA). Under appropriate reaction conditions, the high molecular weight polymer (molecular weight = 4.1 x 10" ) was obtained. [Pg.208]

Characteristic initiation behavior of rare earth metals was also found in the polymerization of polar and nonpolar monomers. In spite of the accelarated development of living isotactic [15] and syndiotactic [16] polymerizations of methyl methacrylate (MMA), the lowest polydispersity indices obtained remain in the region of Mw/Mn = 1.08 for an Mn of only 21 200. Thus, the synthesis of high molecular weight polymers (Mn > 100 x 103) with Mw/Mn < 1.05 is still an important target in both polar and nonpolar polymer chemistry. Undoubtedly, the availability of compositionally pure materials is a must for the accurate physical and chemical characterization of polymeric materials. [Pg.58]

The molecular weight of the polymers can be controlled (from ca. 50,000 to above 1,000,000) by changing the reaction temperature and time, the solvent, the concentration of the monomer, and the amount of base [39,40]. High molecular-weight polymers and a high content of trans double bonds are the reasons for the wide usage of Gilch polymerization in the synthesis of PPV homo- and copolymers. [Pg.55]

Since PTFE was first synthesized more than 50 years ago, fluoropolymers have been produced by radical polymerization and copolymerizaton processes, but without any functional groups, for several reasons. First, the synthesis of functional vinyl compounds suitable for radical polymerization is much more complicated and expensive in comparison with common fluoroolefins. In radical polymerization of one of the simplest possible candidates—perfluorovinyl sulfonic acid (or sulfonyl fluoride—there was not enough reactivity to provide high-molecular-weight polymers or even perfluorinated copolymers with considerable functional comonomer content. Several methods for the synthesis of the other simplest monomer—trifluoroacrylic acid or its esters—were reported,1 but convenient improved synthesis of these compounds as well as radical copolymerization with TFE induced by y-irradiation were not described until 1980.2... [Pg.92]

In the late 1970s, Kirchhoff at Dow Chemical Company developed the use of benzocyclobutenes in polymer synthesis and modification. These efforts culminated in 1985 with the issuance of the first patent describing the use of benzocyclobutene in the synthesis of high-molecular-weight polymer.27 Similar work that involved a thermosetting system based on Diels-Alder cycloaddition between terminal benzocyclobutene and alkyne groups,28,29 was reported separately and independently by Tan and Arnold.28 Since these initial discoveries, the field of benzocyclobutene polymers has expanded rapidly and benzocyclobutene chemistry constitutes the basis of a new and versatile approach to the synthesis of high-performance polymers for applications in the electronics and aerospace industries.30... [Pg.286]
