The accuracy of most TB schemes is rather low, although some implementations may reach the accuracy of more advanced self-consistent LCAO methods (for examples of the latter see [18,19 and 20]). However, the advantages of TB are that it is fast, provides at least approximate electronic properties and can be used for quite large systems (e.g., thousands of atoms), unlike some of the more accurate condensed matter methods. TB results can also be used as input to detennine other properties (e.g., photoemission spectra) for which high accuracy is not essential. [Pg.2204]

As outlined above, electron transfer through the passive film can also be cmcial for passivation and thus for the corrosion behaviour of a metal. Therefore, interest has grown in studies of the electronic properties of passive films. Many passive films are of a semiconductive nature [92, 93, 94, 95, 96, 97, 98, 99, 100, 101, 102 and 1031 and therefore can be investigated with teclmiques borrowed from semiconductor electrochemistry—most typically photoelectrochemistry and capacitance measurements of the Mott-Schottky type [104]. Generally it is found that many passive films cannot be described as ideal but rather as amorjDhous or highly defective semiconductors which often exlribit doping levels close to degeneracy [105]. [Pg.2726]

Thus far the importance of carbon cluster chemistry has been in the discovery of new knowl edge Many scientists feel that the earliest industrial applications of the fullerenes will be based on their novel electrical properties Buckminsterfullerene is an insulator but has a high electron affinity and is a superconductor in its reduced form Nanotubes have aroused a great deal of interest for their electrical properties and as potential sources of carbon fibers of great strength... [Pg.437]

Turning now to electrophilic aromatic substitution in (trifluoromethyl)benzene we con sider the electronic properties of a trifluoromethyl group Because of their high elec tronegativity the three fluorine atoms polarize the electron distribution m their ct bonds to carbon so that carbon bears a partial positive charge... [Pg.492]

Polyimides (PI) were among the eadiest candidates in the field of thermally stable polymers. In addition to high temperature property retention, these materials also exhibit chemical resistance and relative ease of synthesis and use. This has led to numerous innovations in the chemistry of synthesis and cure mechanisms, stmcture variations, and ultimately products and appHcations. Polyimides (qv) are available as films, fibers, enamels or varnishes, adhesives, matrix resins for composites, and mol ding powders. They are used in numerous commercial and military aircraft as stmctural composites, eg, over a ton of polyimide film is presently used on the NASA shuttle orbiter. Work continues on these materials, including the more recent electronic apphcations. [Pg.530]

Electron Level Position. One essential condition of spectral sensitization by electron transfer is that the LUMO of the dye be positioned above the bottom of the conduction band, eg, > —3.23 eV in AgBr or > —4.25 eV in ZnO (108). To provide the desired frontier level position respectively to the valence and conduction bands of the semiconductor, it is necessary to use a polymethine with suitable electron-donor abiHty (Pq. Increasing the parameter (Pq leads to the frontier level shift up, and vice versa. Chain lengthening is known to be accompanied by a decrease of LUMO energy and hence by a decrease of sensitization properties. As a result, it is necessary to use dyes with high electron-donor abiHty for sensitization in the near-ir. The desired value of (Pq can be provided by end groups with the needed topological index Oq or suitable substituents (112). [Pg.499]

The physical properties of amine oxides are attributed to the semipolar or coordinate bond between the oxygen and nitrogen atoms with high electron density residing on oxygen. [Pg.188]

TT-Electron materials, which are defined as those having extended Jt-electron clouds in the solid state, have various peculiar properties such as high electron mobility and chemical/biological activities. We have developed a set of techniques for synthesizing carbonaceous K-electron materials, especially crystalline graphite and carbon nanotubes, at temperatures below 1000°C. We have also revealed new types of physical or chemical interactions between Jt-electron materials and various other materials. The unique interactions found in various Jt-electron materials, especially carbon nanotubes, will lay the foundation for developing novel functional, electronic devices in the next generation. [Pg.153]

Traditionally, the chemical stability of the electrode/electrolyte interface and its electronic properties have not been given as much consideration as structural aspects of solid electrolytes, in spite of the fact that the proper operation of a battery often depends more on the interface than on the solid electrolyte. Because of the high ionic conductivity in the electrolyte and the high electronic conductivity in the electrode, the voltage falls completely within a very narrow region at the electrolyte/electrode interface. [Pg.538]
