Hicks’ procedure

Methyl methacrylate monomer (MMA) was purified by a modification of Hicks procedure the monomer was washed alternately with 10% aqueous NaOH and water five times. After drying first over CaCl2 for two hours and subsequently over Na2S04 for two hours, the MMA was distilled under nitrogen. The fraction boiling at 40.0 - 40.5 C/80 torr was collected and stored at -25 C until needed. 

Hicks et al. [8] developed a correlation involving the Pumping number and impeller Reynolds number for several ratios of impeller diameter to tank diameter (D /D ) for pitched-blade turbines. From this coiTclation, Qp can be determined, and thus the bulk fluid velocity from the cross-sectional area of the tank. The procedure for determining the parameters is iterative because the impeller diameter and rotational speed N appear in both dimensionless parameters (i.e., Npe and Nq).

Harper (1979) and Doner and Hicks (1982) have reviewed the various methods for analysis of lactose and its derivatives. More recently, Roetman (1981) has described methods for the quantitative determination of crystalline lactose in milk products. The reader should consult these reviews for information on specific procedures.

Two procedures have been adopted to prevent oxidation of excess unreacted iodide by molecular oxygen. Either unreacted iodide is com-plexed with cadmium (Buege and Aust, 1978), or spectrophotometric measurements are made in air-free stoppered cuvettes and development of I3 is followed continuously. The second procedure allows reliable detection of the reaction end point and identifies any oxygen contamination (Hicks and Gebicki, 1979), but it is not applicable to routine measurements of many samples as the time taken for complete reduction of the hydroperoxide is prohibitive. Methods are therefore described which are based only on the procedure utilizing cadmium. 

Individual difference measures are derived from various reaction time procedures (Hick s, S. Sternberg s and Posner s), and these correlate significantly with ability test scores (for a review see Neubauer 1997).

MBR have also found use in the production of polysaccharides. MBR provide a simplified method for producing these materials, which are, typically, obtained in small quantities from natural sources by elaborate procedures. Hicke et al. [4.64] reported the synthesis of inulin (poly-j8-(2,l)-frutan) in a MBR with the aid of fructosyltransferase immobilized in the membrane s porous structure. Inulin, with a high molecular weight and low polydispersity, was continuously synthesized from sucrose, as the substrate passed through the MF membrane. 

Fernandez and Kahn (F3) reported that the accuracy and precision of the Delves method are adequate for the determination of normal and excess lead levels in blood and that 30-50 samples could be analyzed in 1 hour. The correlation coefiicient between their results and those using a colorimetric dithizone procedure was 0.99. Heinemann (H4) was able to analyze a single heparinized blood sample in less than 5 minutes and 30-40 samples in 1 hour using the Delves procedure. He also analyzed untreated urine. Hicks et al. (H6) found a correlation coefficient of 0.96 between the Delves method and conventional macro atomic absorption measurements the coefficient of variation for the Delves method was 8% at 40 /tg of lead per 100 ml. Another method for determining the characteristic values consists simply in computing the numerical value of the secular determinant for trial values of X. When enough calculations have been performed to yield both positive and negative values of the determinant, interpolation may be used to approximate a root. A modification of this procedure involves a method of constructing the characteristic polynomial from the values of the determinant evaluated at n - - 1 regularly spaced trial values of X.
