Many floral notes overlap in the types of material from which they can be made. What we notice immediately on examining the composition of the perfume is the almost complete absence of the classical fresh top note that we saw in the earlier perfumes, and the dominance of two materials, hedione (10%) and hexyl cinnamic aldehyde (12%), which with the musks make up some 30% of the formula. This is moving toward the type of structure that we associate with many of the modern linear perfumes. Anais Anais is a fragrance that remains comparatively unchanged throughout its evaporation. 

As would be expected in a chypre, the floral aspect of Cabochard is again dominated by jasmin and hydroxycitronellal (15%), but here with a small amount of hyacinth to back up the galbanum, and a fresh rose note given by geraniol. The jasmin is no longer the classic type found in Ma Griffe and Miss Dior but one based on benzyl acetate, Jessemal (4%), and hexyl cinnamic aldehyde (6%). 

Compared with other types of chypre, Cabochard contains a relatively large amount of sandalwood (6%). Perhaps the use of this in combination with hexyl cinnamic aldehyde was, in another context, to influence the creation a year later of Madame Rochas. The same com-... 

In hexyl cinnamic aldehyde, which has one more carbon atom in the side chain, the aldehydic note is virtually missing altogether. (The molecule is also chemically more stable.)... 

In the first type, which includes aldehyde C12 lauric and phenylacetaldehyde, the balance of the reaction lies in favor of the combined molecule. In the second, however, to which belong aldehyde C12 MNA, cyclamen aldehyde, hydratropic aldehyde, and Lilial, the balance lies more toward the original material. Most ketones also behave in this way. The third type, which includes amyl and hexyl cinnamic aldehydes, do not undergo the aldol reaction and are therefore more stable. Aldehydes such as anisaldehyde and Triplal, in which the —CHO is linked directly to a ring structure, are also less reactive.
