Hexabenzocoronene, molecular structure

Fig. 16 The molecular structure of two components, poly(ethylene oxide)-Wocfc-poly(i.-lysine) (32) and hexa-peri-hexabenzocoronene (33), used to form an ionic complex SLCP and a model of its a-helical-wif/im-discotic columnar structure. Each a-helical poly(L-lysine) chain is surrounded symmetrically by six columns of 33 (disks) [99]... Hexa-/7cn-hexabenzocoronene (HBC), which comprises 13 fused benzene rings, can be regarded as one of the smallest members of molecular graphenes, and has been utilized for supramolecular chemistry aiming at organic electronics. The first synthesis of this important structural motif dates back to the work of Clar and Ironside, where 2 3-7 8-dibenzo-pm-naphthene was allowed to react with Br2 in benzene, and an insoluble fraction, isolated by filtration of the reaction mixture, was heated in a stepwise manner (Scholl reaction. Scheme 1). However, as expected, this solid-state synthesis suffered from low yield and difficulty in purification. Although continuous efforts... [Pg.3541]

As discussed in Chaps. 3 and 4, (columnar) discotic liquid crystals are oriented in columns separated by molten aliphatic chains and, consequently, they can conduct charge efficiently along the channels in one dimension. The organization of the different phases is described elsewhere [19, 20] and the efficiency of charge transport can be directly related to the short intermolecular spacing and order of different types of mesophase, with few exceptions [21]. For example, hole mobility is higher in ordered, rather than disordered, columnar phases and even higher in helically-ordered phases where molecular rotation is suppressed about the columnar axis [22], Some mesomorphic derivatives of hexabenzocoronene, for example hexaphenyl-substituted hexabenzocoronene (HBCn, see Table 8.2 for chemical structures of all discotic materials discussed here) have hole mobilities... [Pg.225]
