Heteroleptic Cyclometalated Iridium III Complexes

A facile route to heteroleptic iridium complexes involves the use of cyclome-talated 2-arylpyridine derivatives of iridium dimers [Ir(Arpy)2Cl]2-4 5 2-Arylpyr-idines (Arpy) can be synthesized using the techniques described by Krohnke6 

The checkers treated the completed reaction with 5 mL of ice and isolated the bright yellow solid by gravity filtration, rinsing the reaction flask and the solid with 5 mL of methanol followed by ether. The crude product was judged pure by NMR spectroscopy.
