The dione was a secondary product. These three products show a preferential attack of the hydroxyl radical on the benzene ring at positions 5 and 8, as is expected from literature results (see Fig. 2 in the case where the OFF radical attack is initiated at position 5). The amount of 5-hydroxy quinoline was diminished by a factor of ca. 2 for the photocatalytic degradation. Although 8-hydroxyquinoline was not entirely extracted from the Ti02 surface, it was clear that a lower amount was formed by the heterogeneous... 

Homogeneous photochemical and heterogeneous catalytic processes are attractive because they do not increase the volume of secondary waste. Heterogeneous photocatalysis offers the further advantage that, post valence control, any additives such as HAN can be photocatalytically degraded to readily disposable gases such as N2 and C02. This will be explored further in the next section.

In heterogeneous photochemistry, an increasing effort is going into the study of the photocatalytic degradation of organic pollutants with Ti02 as a photocatalyst. In these oxidation processes either the organic compound is directly oxidized by the valence band holes (hvli+)...
