Heterocyclic compounds seven-membered rings

The NMR spectra of heterocyclic compounds with seven or more ring members are as diverse as the shape, size and degree of unsaturation of the compounds. NMR is perhaps the most important physical method to ascertain the structure, especially the conformational statics and dynamics, of large heterocycles. Proton-proton coupling constants provide a wealth of data on the shape of the molecules, while chemical shift data, heteroatom-proton coupling constants and heteronuclear spectra give information of the electronic structure. Aromatic sextets can also be present in five- and seven-membered rings. If a five-membered ring has two double bonds and the fifth atom possesses an unshared pair of electrons, the ring has five p orbitals that can overlap to create five new orbitals— three bonding and two antibonding (Fig. 2.6). There are six electrons for these orbitals the four p orbitals of the double bonds each contribute one and the filled orbital contributes the other two. The condensation reaction gives very high yields, but the preparation of the reactants (106) is often complicated. For the preparation of pseudoazulene systems 5 and 6 formed by exchange of two C—C bonds of the seven-membered ring in azulene (Scheme 1), five-membered dicarbonyl compounds of type 107 are used. The second method employed for the synthesis of telluraxanthene is similar to that widely used for the preparation of various tricyclic heterocycles containing one or two heteroatoms. It is based on the interaction of 2,2 -dilithiodiphenylmethane with powdered tellurium, by which reaction telluraxanthene 82 has been prepared in 50% yield [81JOM(205)167]. The reaction apparently proceeds through the intermediate bis(telluro-phenolate) 86 which is oxidized to the heterocyclic ditelluride 87.
