Hermetic effect

Blackpowder may explode violently if it is confined in an air-tight container and initiated with a strong initiator. Its lead block expansion scarcely amounts to 30 cm1 due to the non-hermetic effect of sand stemming. In an iron tube 35-41 mm dia. it gives a rate of explosion of 400 m/sec. 

Chemical degradation can be avoided by using closed stmctures, which may have protective covets or which may be fully hermetic, as well as by using unreactive metals. Barrier coatings ate effective in some cases, and polyethylene—polybutene grease (8) is used in some splicing connectors for telecommunications cable.

When metal inserts require hermetic sealing, consider coating them with a flexible elastomer such as an RTV rubber, polyurethane, or epoxy system. A second method is to design an annular space or reservoir at one end of the insert from which to dispense the flexible elastomers to effectively create a hermetic seal. Flexible sealants are also used to compensate for differences in the thermal coefficient of expansion between metal and plastic.

Strip packages represent an alternative form of packaging for unit-dose medication. Strips can be produced from single- or multiple-ply laminated materials provided the two inner plies can be sealed by heat or pressure (e.g., cold self-adhesive seals). Materials can range from relatively permeable plies to those that incorporate a foil ply of sufficient thickness and effectiveness of seal so that an individual hermetic seal is produced for each dosage. Strip packages are produced at lower speeds and occupy greater volume than blisters. 

A violent explosion occurred at the start of bulb-tube distillation of a 2 g sample of the crude aldehyde (b.p. 9774 mbar) at 75°C/0.13 mbar [1], It seems likely that the crude product could have formed peroxide during the 2 day s storage (in a closed but not hermetically sealed vessel) between preparation and distillation.
