The hepatitis D virus, also known as the Delta virus, is replication defective in humans it can only replicate in the presence of HBV, and is acquired in the same way. Infection may occur at the same time as the hepatitis B infection (co-infection) or an individual infected with hepatitis B may acquire hepatitis D at a later date (superinfection). The combination of hepatitis B with hepatitis D significantly increases the risk of progression to chronic hepatitis and cirrhosis. [Pg.57]

Remissions in chronic hepatitis B induced by IFN are sustained in >80% of patients treated and frequently are followed by loss of HBV surface antigen (HbsAg), histological improvement or stabilization, and reduced risk of liver-related complications and mortality. IFN may benefit some patients with glomerulonephritis owing to chronic HBV infection. Antiviral effects and improvements occur in -50% of chronic hepatitis D virus (HDV) infections, but relapse is common unless HbsAg disappears. IFN does not appear to be beneficial in acute HBV or HDV infections. [Pg.833]

Hepatitis D Severe type of hepatitis caused by presence of both hepatitis D and hepatitis B viruses, hepatitis D virus is an incomplete virus and cannot replicate without presence of hepatitis B virus as a helper. Known also as delta hapatitis. [Pg.1142]
