Heparin monosulfate

The enzyme is very specific, acting only on heparin (Km = 4.2 X 10-5M) and heparin monosulfate. Heparinase acts endolytically as an a-1, 4-elimi-nase cleaving heparin (MW = 10,000) at 7 to 8 sites (42).

As already mentioned in the preceding section, there is a marked similarity between the chemical constitutions and chemical properties of heparan sulfate and of heparin. Thus, it has been proposed to place in the same class of compounds the dextrorotatory sulfated pol3rsaccharides composed of D-glucosamine and D-glucuronic acid residues", such as the heparin monosulfate , the heparitin sulfates" with various degrees of sulfation, and the heparins with various degrees of sulfation . 

Heparitin sulfate, heparan sulfate a monosulfate ester of an acetylated (IV-acetyl) heparin. As isolated from animal tissues (liver), H. s. is probably a mixture of mucopolysaccharides with varying degrees of sulfa-tation or amino group acetylation.
