Henbane Leaves

HENBANE LEAF, Hyoscyami folium is the dried leaf of Hyoscyamus niger L., family Solanaceae, originally growing in Europe, nowadays spread all over the globe. The alkaloid content is 0.04-0.17%, with L-hyoscyamine and L-scopolamine found usually in the ratio 1.2 1 in mature plants. [Pg.50]

Hyoscyamus plants, namely henbane, have been known to man from ancient times as a remedy for various diseases. One of the allied species of Hyoscyamus niger (described as Hyoscyamus leaf in the European Pharmacopoeia), Hyoscyamus albus is grown on the European Continent, particularly in France, and in the Indian subcontinent [1]. Quantitatively and qualitatively its alkaloids appear similar to those of H. niger [1]. [Pg.406]

A racemic mixture of hyoscyamine, the principal tropane alkaloid of Belladonna herb (Atropa belladonna), henbane (Hyoscyamus niger) or stramonium leaf (Datura stramonium) used in medicine when temporary reversible muscarinic blockade is needed, for example, to overcome bradycardia, as an antidote for overdose of cholinergic drugs or cholinesterase poisoning. [Pg.272]
