Hemorrhagic fever virus

If health officials fail to detect the release until people start becoming ill, physicians should instruct their patients to begin a fever watch. Those who develop an unexplained fever or flu-like illness within 14 days of exposure should begin treatment as outlined in Tables 2.15 and 2.16, depending on whether the outbreak involves a contained or mass casualty scenario. Patients with tularemia do not require isolation, and close contacts of cases do not require prophylaxis because person-to-person transmission does not occur (43). [Pg.91]

Several viruses, belonging to four distinct families, Arenaviridae, Bunyaviridae, Filoviridae, and Flaviviridae, cause viral hemorrhagic fever (VHF). All four VHF virus families share several characteristics (47,48)  [Pg.91]

Is a member of the New World hemorrhagic fever viruses normally found in Brazil. The natural reservoir is the rice rat (Oryzomys) and the virus is shed in their urine. Infection occurs after inhalation of dust contaminated with excreta from infected rats or from aerosol of animal blood or fluids. Does not produce disease in animals. This is a biosafety level 3 agent. [Pg.544]
