Held Hostage

A "political" decision issued on the same day as the peer review blasted the EPA study. After the EPA officials had been held hostage, President Carter declared a state of emergency in the Love Canal area, paving the way for evacuation of up to 710 families. 

Exposure to a traumatic event is required for a diagnosis of PTSD. The person must have witnessed, experienced, or have been confronted with a situation that involved definite or threatened death or serious injury, or possible harm to themselves or others. The patient s response to the trauma must include intense fear, helplessness, or horror. Some examples of traumatic events include motor vehicle accidents, natural disasters, rape, being held hostage, child sexual abuse, and witnessing a murder or injury of another. 

On the final day of the conference, a permanent International Zeolite Conference Committee was elected, consisting of Miss Edith M. Flanigen, Chairman, Prof. R. M. Barrer, Dr. H. B. Habgood, Prof. A. V. Kiselev, Dr. P. K. Maher, Prof. W. M. Meier, Dr. C. Naccache, Prof. J. V. Smith, Prof. J. B. Uytterhoeven, and Dr. P. B. Venuto. It was voted to accept the invitation of Prof. Walter M. Meier to host the third conference in Zurich, Switzerland, in September 1973, under the chairmanship of Prof. Meier. Unfortunately, he could not attend the second conference because en route his plane was hijacked to the Jordanian desert where he was held hostage. 

The economic potential of marine manganese deposits and the potential of these deposits as paleoenvironmental indicators are directly related to the chemistry of manganese, its associated transition metals and other key elements adsorbed on to the surface of these deposits. It is this complex interplay of these factors which makes the study of marine manganese deposits so intriguing. Unfortunately, research on deep-sea manganese nodules and crasts has been held hostage to the economic potential of these deposits. Time will tell if these deposits are to become a major source of metals for the world as was once thought.

Bruce and Hayes also produced Held Hostage, a 48-minute film about three Americans who worked for a private military contractor and, like Betancourt, were being held by Colombian guerrillas. At the time this interview was conducted, in June 2006, the contractors and Betancourt remained in captivity. They were rescued on July 2, 2008, and HBO reacquired the rights to air The Kidnapping of Ingrid Betancourt. In a joint deal with CNN, the film aired on CNN Presents just days later (both HBO and CNN are owned by TimeWarner). 

A lot of times, some very strongly opinionated Colombians or even Americans will say, "You didn t tell the FARC side" or "You didn t tell the paramilitary side." And you say, "Colombia is such a complicated country. There s just no way to do a political story and a personal story." But then we did Held Hostage, and so now we tell people, "Buy our next film." Because we cover the drug dealers, the paramilitaries, the guerrillas these are all the factions. To me, it s not hard, because I feel like I m more of a storyteller. You can pick one side. This is a narrative and that s Ingrid s opinion. 

A search will also continue for elemental analysis techniques based on direct instrumental methods with enhanced powers of detection and more or less complete matrix independence. The motivation for this search goes beyond mere economic factors direct methods are also less likely to be held hostage to blank readings, because physical sources of excitation (e.g., photons, electrons, charged particles, neutrons), which H. Malissa and M. Grasserbauer [55] characterize as physical reagents, are essentially free of material contamination. 

Survival beyond respiratory failure may last months or years [when mechanical ventilation (MV) is used] (1-3). When planning optimal management of care, physicians and health care providers may unintentionally overlook crucial problems regarding the needs of family caregivers who are held hostage in their homes. Those who are severely disabled and ventilator dependent rarely visit their physicians. Furthermore, health care professionals may have limited experience in observing LTMV patients in the home setting.
