Where s is an index set making reference to the states in the superstructure, Zs is a Boolean variable that takes the value True if a given state exists, Ws is a Boolean variable that takes the value of True is a Heat exchanger associated to that state exists. And the last equation makes reference to the logical relationships among states (tasks) and heat exchangers in order to assure feasible separations. 

With the first of these, chemical splitting, final treatment is then in a separator. With the second, thermal splitting, complete process equipment is normally involved, incorporating heat exchangers associated with evaporators or centrifuges. 

K AIE 20, has emerged as a highly efficient, noncorrosive, and nonhazardous flux for brazing aluminum parts of heat exchangers. Nocolok 100 Flux (Alcan Aluminum Corp.) developed by Alcan (Aluminum Co. of Canada) has been the first commercial product. Its use and mechanistic aspects of the associated brazing process have been weU documented (33—37).

After compression and removal of impurities, the air is cooled ia heat exchangers and expanded to low pressure through a turbiae, to recover energy, or through a valve. Liquid air, which forms at about 80 K, is separated via a distillation column. The column as well as the heat exchangers and the associated piping are placed within a cold box, which is packed with iasulation to minimise heat transfer (qv) between streams and to protect the system from the ambient air external to the cold box. 

Most processing is thermal. Reaction systems and separation systems are typically dominated by the associated heat exchange. Optimisation of this heat exchange has tremendous leverage on the ultimate process efficiency (see HeaT-EXCHANGETECHNOLOGy). 

TEMA Numbering and Type Designation Recommended practice for the designation of TEMA-style shell-and-tube heat exchangers by numbers and letters has been established by the Tubular Exchanger Manufacturers Association (TEMA). This information from the sixth edition of the TEMA Standards is reproduced in the following paragraphs.

Shells, clams, wood fragments, and other biological materials can also produce concentration cell corrosion. Additionally, fragments can lodge in heat exchanger inlets, locally increasing turbulence and erosion-corrosion. If deposits are massive, turbulence, air separation, and associated erosion-corrosion can occur downstream (see Case History 11.5).
