I first came to know enzymes through a curious set of circumstances. I was training to be a physician when World War II supervened and so found myself a ship s doctor in an armed force branch of the United States Public Health Service. After a few months of sea duty, a transfer was expedited by a captain exasperated with my inattention to naval etiquette. On the strength of research I had done as a student investigating my own jaundice, I was assigned in 1942 to work on rat nutrition at the National Institute of Health.
